Understanding Military Procedures and the Uniform Code of Military Justice

Military law attorney Dennis Boyle represents service members at all levels of courts-martial and for all levels of alleged crimes. He has more than two decades of experience as a Navy JAG officer, rising to the rank of commander before retiring. During that time, he represented hundreds of sailors and Marines charged with everything from minor crimes to espionage and murder.

After leaving active duty, Mr. Boyle served in a variety of reserve positions, including as the executive officer for an appellate defense unit where he argued cases before the Navy Marine Corps Court of Criminal Appeals. His last assignment before retiring was as a commissioner with the Navy Marine Corps Court of Criminal Appeals. Mr. Boyle understands the challenges facing soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines in the field as well as questions of evidence and procedure in military criminal prosecutions.

Why Hire a Civilian Lawyer?

Military lawyers are free of charge, but they do not have the freedom that a civilian lawyer has to defend you. Like you, military lawyers are subject to pressures of command and other significant pressure that could infringe on their representation.

Representation in Courts-Martial

Courts-martial are military criminal tribunals. General courts-martial can impose any sentence authorized under Title 10 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), up to and including death. Special courts-martial can impose incarceration up to, but not more than, one year.

Nonjudicial Punishment ▪ Administrative Separation Boards ▪ Boards of Inquiry

Dennis Boyle also defends enlisted individuals in military administrative law proceedings, including in nonjudicial punishment proceedings (NJP or Captain's Mast, Admiral's Mast, Office Hours and Article 15) and in front of the Administrative Separation Boards and Boards of Inquiry. If you face involuntary separation from the military, you have substantial rights that our law firm can help protect.
